Computers doen alleen dat wat zij hebben 'geleerd'. Als jij zelf degene bent die het de computer heeft geleerd, weet jij (hopelijk) hoe de computer gaat reageren.

Dat 'reageren' van zo'n computer kan wel eens kompleet anders zijn dan wat je verwacht.
De logica waarom zo'n apparaat zo reageert ontgaat je dan volledig ontgaan.\

Hoe kom je ernu achter wat je wel moet doen.

Het internet staat bol van oplossingen, maar zijn ze te vinden?
Laat mij nu eens weten wanneer je 't niet kan vinden!

Het vervelende met computers is dat zij alleen doen wat ze weten. Zo is een directory een directory. En daar mag je naar kijken, dat heet lzen in computertaal. Maar de volume 'System Volume Information' daar mag je niet in kijken. Je moet ook moeite doen om die folder te zien. Maar als je een hard-disk probeert te kopieren ontdek je deze folder vanzelf.
't werkt niet met Windows xcopy.
't Werkt niet met Java Ant.
't werkt wel onder Windows.
Kost maar (bijna) een miljard euros.
Leuk he, die niet gedocumenteerde features.

Man, woman and kids are going to loose the battle from computer information capability on every front. The computer is able to show simple information in such enormous numbers and so fast nobody can ever follow what's happening.

One item example:
Real time Stock values and Exchange rates. The individual data changes 1 to 1000 times every second. Humans can only follow the trend of the change by looking to aggregated information.

Multiple items example:
RSS feeds. The internet have data as aggregated information, your own computer is gathering all information for you.

And who is not able to digest this information at this time....
Yeah it's you Human Being.

Hating Computers

Yes you have read correctly, I am starting to hate/hate computers.

For a lot of people this is a really outrages confession. So be it. The most important factor is why do I hate computers or maybe do I really hate computers.

First of all I don't hate the apparatus. It is a silly thing doing nothing else then executing what it has been told to do.

Secondly I don't hate the Operating Systems since they have to execute all the nonsense people has invented to be run on a computer.

Third I dont hate the programs I am running, since I have decided to use them.

What I do hate are the update messages. Busy with MS Excel, needing some other program function (like Adobe), update message. Restart, Where was I, O yes excel, needing printing, update message, Restart, where was I, o yes excel, etc.

Experience
I have a lot of experience in life, computers and some other things. Lets focus on the computer part. I know my boss in 1986 said that a computer running more than 2 or more human session were too much to understand. I did not agree at that time.
Nowadays I am puzzled. I can use severals sessions at the same time. But how many sessions is normal?

FireFox Blog Editor Performancing

After last night rearranging my blog I wondered if a Firefox Blog Editor exists. I found Performancing and this blog entry is made with this tool. It looks cool, but does not have all the build in gimmicks, features and options of non-browser based tools as Ecto, Qumana, RocketPost, w.bloggar, but looks nice, easy, fast and handy.
I have downloaded:

• Ecto. I can not find an Blog-HTML-Code viewer, exit Ecto.
• Qumana. It currently does not hold the history of the published blog, exit Qumana.
• w.bloggar, View of Blog-HTML-Code and WYSIWYG, but no editing in WYSIWYG, exit w.bloggar

But the also the Firefox plugin Performancing has ennoying parts: It adds a lot of duplicate code when editing an existing blog.

My Conclusion:
I am still using the standard Blogger interface!

Microsoft and RSS Feeds

On 14 august one Mike Torres renamed RSS-Feeds into Web-Feeds. Everybody can rename anything, but since Mike is a manager at Microsoft and there is not enough news a lot of commotion has been raised. Why?
In his article Mike is claiming other companies use also different names. So if someone else is doing something wrong, Mike may make the same mistake. Ok, so managers of Microsoft does not learn anything from:
* KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid: RSS = RSS and let us keep it that way!
* Not Invented Here Syndrome: RSS has been invented...not by Microsoft!
* A standard is a standard: W3C has never heard of standard HTML etc...
The days of Microsoft as leader are already numbered, but clever management will end this much sooner.

Information

What is the best way to maintain information? Well that depends. If you want to share information and make it easy editable by anyone a wiki is the best. If you want to parse news a static html-page and rss-feeds are the best.

Wiki
The first Wiki, Portland Pattern Repository, has been made by Ward Cunningham on March 25, 1995. Although the Wiki idea is great is has also an important disadvantage: Vandalism and Spam Attacks. Vandalism can be stopped by using registration procedures to limit write access.
Also a Wiki will only work if the people want to participate. To some people a the Wiki self forms a barrier. To ohers it is just to much work. Or is it we don't want to share our knowledge?
I am currently trying Atlassian Confluence, an application combining Wiki, News and RSS. The first impressions are quite nice, but I have not opened it for anonymous use.

Windows fails again

Again Windows 2000 failed to work. Due to a hardware problem with one of my diskdrives probably. The only way to correct the problem is repair the system with the original installation CD. You can hear the D-drive has problems. The hissing, sliding off sounds of the head over the surface of the disk made that clear. Reformatting the old D-drive again, which take a lot of time (3 hours). Maybe a better idea is to get rid of this hard-drive giving nothing more than a lot of problems.
